Breast milk on the go: storing, carrying and warming

How long does expressed milk keep in a cool bag, the fridge or the freezer? And how do you warm it safely when you are not at home? An overview based on the guidelines from Kind en Gezin (the Flemish child and family agency).

Expressed breast milk is precious. You want to use it sparingly, but also be sure it is safe for your baby. The good news: with a few simple rules you can take breast milk to work, to childcare or on a day out without worrying.

How long does breast milk keep?

These are the storage times Kind en Gezin (the Flemish child and family agency) uses for freshly expressed breast milk:

Where How long
Room temperature (16–29 °C) 4 hours
Cool bag with ice pack (approx. 15 °C) up to 24 hours
Fridge (4 °C), at the back 4 days
Freezer (−18 °C or colder) at least 6 months

For thawed and warmed milk the times are shorter:

  • Thawed milk: use within 24 hours, never refreeze.
  • Leftover warmed milk: up to 1 more hour at room temperature.

Always store milk at the back of the fridge, not in the door: that is where the temperature fluctuates least.

Taking breast milk with you

  • Use a cool bag with an ice pack for anything that will be out for more than a few hours.
  • Express or carry in small portions (for example 60 to 120 ml). That way you never warm more than your baby drinks and you throw less away.
  • Write the date and time on every bottle or bag, so you always know which milk to use first.
  • Frozen milk should be carried as cold as possible and ideally thawed slowly in the fridge.

Warming, even without a kitchen

Kind en Gezin advises warming breast milk slowly to 37 °C, in a pan of warm water (bain-marie) or in a bottle warmer. The microwave is not recommended: it heats unevenly and can create hot spots.

On the go, a pan of warm water is usually not an option. A portable bottle warmer solves that. You screw the Monkilou bottle warmer onto the bottle; the milk flows into a stainless steel chamber and warms through direct contact, without water or a plug socket. For breast milk, choose the 37 or 40 °C setting.

Don't keep it warm for too long

Lukewarm milk is ideal for your baby, but also for bacteria. That is why we say it honestly: keep breast milk warm for no more than 30 minutes. Is your little one still asleep, or is it taking longer? Then keep the milk cool and only warm it when your baby is really ready to drink.

Checklist for your bag

  • Cool bag with ice pack
  • Expressed milk in small portions, dated
  • Clean bottle and teat
  • Charged bottle warmer (and the USB-C cable)
  • A cloth to wipe the warmer after use: never under the tap

These storage times apply to healthy, full-term babies. If your baby was born prematurely or is unwell, follow the advice of your healthcare provider.
